Access to open government is vitally important in a free society. That's why it is important that government accountability, open records and access be among of Gov. Bobby Jindal's top priorities in his administration.
Louisiana has some strong open records laws, but there is always room for improvement. Central Louisiana has been witness to some of the problems that may exist with current laws that do not take into account latest technologies and do not address platforms that expand the definitions of a "record" or "document."
Federal, state and local governments have been claiming a growing number of exemptions to public records laws across the country. This often results in citizens facing increased obstacles and frustration in their efforts to gain access to government and information.
