In Gov. Bobby Jindal's two special legislative sessions, practically every successful measure will - in some way - boost the state's economy by making Louisiana more attractive to business and industry. The first session focused on ethics reform. It is already helping to erase an image of graft and corruption in government that has caused firms planning to relocate or expand to bypass Louisiana. The second session slashed the state tax on business utilities and on corporate debt and is accelerating the phasing out of the sales tax on new business equipment.
Another Jindal proposal, committing $1 billion in one-time surplus money to one-time spending on roads, bridges, ports and coastal restoration, enhances the state's appeal to new business and industry.
In the upcoming regular legislative session, Jindal takes another logical step to improve Louisiana's business climate. At a Monday meeting in Lafayette, he said the major goal of his administration during the session will be to improve workforce development.
