BATON ROUGE — State lawmakers will return to the Capitol on Sunday for a second special session, this time dealing with tax cuts for businesses and parents who pay tuition to private schools and spending $1.1 billion in surplus funds left by the Blanco administration.
Gov. Bobby Jindal has allotted 21 days for the session, but like his first session that concluded nine days early, he's counting on this one to end early.
The governor describes his plan as "an aggressive agenda." He calls for an end to millions of dollars in business taxes he says provide other states with a weapon in fighting for new business, funneling $80 million into college and university repair work, $515 million into road and bridge projects and port improvements, and allocating $70 million to cover the "ever-growing" cost of the state employee- and teacher-retirement systems.
