Editorial: Bolstering economic fund demands hard questions- April 5, 2008

EDITORIAL

If it takes money to make money, the state could be on its way to a mint based on Gov. Bobby Jindal's lavish budget plans for his Department of Economic Development.

Consider that Jindal's proposed budget:

 

n Pumps up the current fund for industrial inducements from $140 million to $450 million.

n Jumps the salary of the state's economic development secretary to $320,000, up from the previous director's salary of $245,000, though it's a reported pay cut for Secretary Stephen Moret who had been the developer in chief for the Baton Rouge Area Chamber of Commerce.

n Pays Moret's deputy secretary $230,000.
